World Poker Tour Announces Dates for 2024 WPT Championship

The World Poker Tour has announced the dates of the 2024 WPT World Championship. For the third year in a row, the WPT’s year ending showpiece festival will take place at Wynn Las Vegas, running from 3-23 December, 2024. The 3-week-long festival will feature the $10,400 WPT World Championship and the WPT Prime World Championship, in addition to a wider schedule of tournaments, full details of which are yet to be announced.

The 2023 WPT World Championship Main Event, also staged at Wynn Las Vegas, carried a $40m prize pool assurance, the largest guarantee ever for a live poker event. The event, which was won by Daniel Sepiol had 3,835 entries and posted an overlay of $2.4m. Despite falling short, the event was lauded as a success, praised by many for the high standard of its organisation and unrivalled player experience.

How Big Will the 2024 WPT Championship Guaranteed Be?

The question still remains about what size the guarantee for the 2024 WPT Championship will be? The first time the event was run in 2022, the $15m guarantee was almost doubled and the $40m guarantee that was set for the 2023 edition was a bold move. It’s improbable that the guarantee could be set any lower than $40m and $50m would seem like the next natural benchmark, but that seems unlikely given that the 2023 event failed to reach its already outrageous target.

Nevertheless, the WPT has a modus operandi of setting itself ambitious and headline grabbing targets. It also recently raised the player experience bar even further, with the recent sailing of the inaugural WPT Voyage, which saw Virgin’s Valiant Lady turned into a floating poker room for a week-long Caribbean Cruise.

PokerWired did reach out to WPT CEO Adam Pliska shortly after the conclusion of the 2023 WPT Championship, asking what the likely size of the 2024 guarantee would be, but unsurprisingly, he declined to comment. Was worth a try. We didn’t really expect to get an exclusive on what will become one of the biggest questions about the 2024 event, until the WPT makes the announcement, which is expected to be by early summer.
